Science Lab

Joy Allen is the science lab teacher at Serrania Charter.

The Serrania Science Lab uses the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) as a guide to make science accessible to all students through hands-on experiences, and by inspiring students to look at the world around them in a variety of ways. Through investigation and observation, students learn to ask questions they can test, to identify patterns in the natural world, as well as looking at systems and their parts.  Engineering lessons have students design, build and test their own prototypes. A foremost goal of these  labs is to encourage students to go out into the world and continue to be curious about how things work the way they do, or why something in nature occurs - to continue to be scientists and engineers outside of the school walls.

The classes rotate into the lab throughout the year, with one rotation for TK-2nd grade students, and two rotations for 3rd-5th grade students. Listed below are the topics taught in Serrania's Science Lab according to grade level:

  • Tk/Kindergarten - Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions & Energy

  • First Grade - Light and Sound

  • Second Grade - Matter and its Interactions

  • Third Grade - Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions & Biological Evolution

  • Fourth Grade - Energy, Waves and their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer

  • Fifth Grade - Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy and Dynamics, & Engineering Design
